Grizzle Ocean Loop

For a short but sweet walk in the wilderness, check out the Grizzle Ocean loop in the Pharaoh Lake Wilderness Area.

Getting there

Follow Route 74 out of Schroon Lake toward Ticonderoga. After about 13 miles turn right on Putts Pond Road. Follow that to the end at Putnam Pond State Campground. There will be a small fee to use when the campground is open, but this time of year it is closed and free to enter. Pass by the booth and turn left to go up a small hill and into a parking area on the left. The trail is located at the far end of the trailhead parking.

As far as dirt road cycling goes, this is a fine option in the area. This is the starting trail for most peoples hike to Crane Pond and the Pharaoh Lake Wilderness Area.

The 46,283-acre Pharaoh Lake Wilderness is an outstanding part of the Adirondacks! The wilderness contains an abundance of lakes and ponds, the largest being Pharaoh Lake, at 441 acres. There are nearly 70 miles of trails within the Wilderness Area and no shortage of campsites. Come for a day hike or spend a weekend!

Hudson Gorge Wilderness Area

The Hudson Gorge Wilderness Area totals 24,477 acres of State Forest Preserve, and is located in the town of Minerva, Newcomb, and Indian Lake. While the main attraction is the Hudson River Gorge for its famous whitewater, and for its hiking trails, hunters will also find a variety of terrain and wildlife if they are willing to bushwhack a bit. 

Hiking

There are a handful of trails leading to views of the Hudson River, tall waterfalls, and backcountry ponds in the Wilderness Area.

The Hudson Gorge Wilderness Area totals 24,477 acres of State Forest Preserve, and is located in the town of Minerva, Newcomb, and Indian Lake. At 275,460 acres, the High Peaks Wilderness Complex includes Eastern (Central) and Western (Outer) zones, as well as the former Dix Mountain Wilderness Area, 11,411 of the Boreas Pond Tract, 4,418 acres of the MacIntyre East Tract, and 1,490 acres of the former Casey Brook Tract.

You can walk the Newcomb Lake Road to historic Great Camp Santanoni, where you'll have spectacular views of Newcomb Lake. Along the way there are interpretive signs of farm life here. Option of a horse drawn wagon for you and your canoe (fee) down a 4.5 mile dirt access road. Closed to all vehicles. Explore the lake and Great Camp Santanoni.
